Guy Hernandez started his horticultural journey as a youngster, performing yard work with his father and older brothers on Saturdays, earning his weekly allowance. After high school, he enrolled in the horticulture program at Mt. San Antonio College and worked for two years as a part-time student in the 5-acre horticulture nursery.

While attending Mt. Sac, he was hired first as a part-time gardener by Descanso Gardens in La Canada, and soon after, full-time. Eventually he became the Display/Plant Propagation Horticulturist. He was responsible for propagation, helped in the creation of displays throughout the gardens, designed and installed planter beds, attended to the edible vegetable gardens used in the education department, taught workshops on plant propagation and holiday succulent wreath making, and gave informational walks during the cherry blossom festival.

Guy left the botanical garden to pursue a B.S. degree in Plant Science at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Whenever his hectic academic schedule allows, he likes working with FNA as it gives him an opportunity to work with others who enjoy what they do, and who share the same practices and goals as himself.
